Mainstreamer
Of the many programs offered by PARC, the Mainstreamer program is one of the most unique in that it is completely self-funded and staffed by volunteers. It is a collaborative effort between PARC and VSA of Illinois. The program offers vacation opportunities to anyone over 18 who has a developmental disability.
We offer travel opportunities to people regardless of the severity of their challenges. The typical support ratio is six vacationers and two escorts. Every effort is made to accommodate everyone, even if additional support is needed. The budget for each trip is based on the typical support ratio and is paid entirely by the vacationers, with no cost to the volunteer escorts.
PARC's Family Support Coordinator (FSC) plans, budgets, and coordinates each trip. All volunteers complete a short training session and work closely with an experienced volunteer. Trips range in length from short day trips to week long excursions. In 2006, the program offered a day trip to a gaming casino in the Quad Cities, a week in San Antonio Texas, and many stops in between. Whether it is a sporting event or a live theater event a traveler can count on professional volunteers to ensure a fun, safe vacation.
If you are fortunate enough to be able to give the gift of time and love to travel, PARC’s FSC would love to sit down and discuss Mainstreamer in more depth. To volunteer or get more information please call Mark Middlebrook at (309) 689-3665 or email him.
